A_4 flavour symmetry breaking scheme for understanding quark and neutrino mixing angles
We propose a spontaneous A_4 flavour symmetry breaking scheme to understand
the observed pattern of quark and neutrino mixing. The fermion mass eigenvalues
are arbitrary, but the mixing angles are constrained in such a way that the
overall patterns are explained while also leaving sufficient freedom to fit the
detailed features of the observed values, including CP violating phases. The
scheme realises the proposal of Low and Volkas to generate zero quark mixing
and tribimaximal neutrino mixing at tree-level, with deviations from both
arising from small corrections after spontaneous A_4 breaking. In the neutrino
sector, the breaking is A_4 --> Z_2, while in the quark and charged-lepton
sectors it is A_4 --> Z_3 = C_3. The full theory has A_4 completely broken, but
the two different unbroken subgroups in the two sectors force the dominant
mixing patterns to be as stated above. Radiative effects within each sector are
shown to deviate neutrino mixing from tribimaximal, while maintaining zero
quark mixing. Interactions between the two sectors -- "cross-talk" -- induce
nonzero quark mixing, and additional deviation from tribimaximal neutrino
mixing. We discuss the vacuum alignment challenge the scenario faces, and
suggest three generic ways to approach the problem. We follow up one of those
ways by sketching how an explicit model realising the symmetry breaking
structure may be constructed.Comment: 14 pages, no figures; v3: Section 5 rewritten to correct an error;

Longitudinal broadening of near side jets due to parton cascade
Longitudinal broadening along direction on near side in
two-dimensional () di-hadron correlation
distribution has been studied for central Au+Au collisions at =
200 GeV, within a dynamical multi-phase transport model. It was found that the
longitudinal broadening is generated by a longitudinal flow induced by strong
parton cascade in central Au+Au collisions, in comparison with p+p collisions
at = 200 GeV. The longitudinal broadening may shed light on the
information about strongly interacting partonic matter at RHIC.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures; accepted by Eur. Phys. J.
China’s livestock transition: Driving forces, impacts, and consequences
China’s livestock industry has experienced a vast transition during the last three decades, with profound effects on domestic and global food provision, resource use, nitrogen and phosphorus losses, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. We provide a comprehensive analysis of the driving forces around this transition and its national and global consequences. The number of livestock units (LUs) tripled in China in less than 30 years, mainly through the growth of landless industrial livestock production systems and the increase in monogastric livestock (from 62 to 74% of total LUs). Changes were fueled through increases in demand as well as, supply of new breeds, new technology, and government support. Production of animal source protein increased 4.9 times, nitrogen use efficiency at herd level tripled, and average feed use and GHG emissions per gram protein produced decreased by a factor of 2 between 1980 and 2010. In the same period, animal feed imports have increased 49 times, total ammonia and GHG emissions to the atmosphere doubled, and nitrogen losses to watercourses tripled. As a consequence, China’s livestock transition has significant global impact. Forecasts for 2050, using the Shared Socio-economic Pathways scenarios, indicate major further changes in livestock production and impacts. On the basis of these possible trajectories, we suggest an alternative transition, which should be implemented by government, processing industries, consumers, and retailers. This new transition is targeted to increase production efficiency and environmental performance at system level, with coupling of crop-livestock production, whole chain manure management, and spatial planning as major components
System-size scan of dihadron azimuthal correlations in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions
System-size dependence of dihadron azimuthal correlations in
ultra-relativistic heavy ion collision is simulated by a multi-phase transport
model. The structure of correlation functions and yields of associated
particles show clear participant path-length dependences in collision systems
with a partonic phase. The splitting parameter and root-mean-square width of
away-side correlation functions increase with collision system size from
N+N to Au+Au collisions. The double-peak
structure of away-side correlation functions can only be formed in sufficient
"large" collision systems under partonic phase. The contrast between the
results with partonic phase and with hadron gas could suggest some hints to
study onset of deconfinment.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 1 table; Nucl. Phys. A (accepted
One-dimensional semiconductor in a polar solvent: Solvation and low-frequency dynamics of an excess charge carrier
Due to solvation, excess charge carriers on 1d semiconductor nanostructures
immersed in polar solvents undergo self-localization into polaronic states.
Using a simplified theoretical model for small-diameter structures, we study
low-frequency properties of resulting 1d adiabatic polarons. The combined
microscopic dynamics of the electronic charge density and the solvent leads to
macroscopic Langevin dynamics of a polaron and to the appearance of local
dielectric relaxation modes. Polaron mobility is evaluated as a function of
system parameters. Numerical estimates indicate that the solvated carriers can
have mobilities orders of magnitude lower than the intrinsic values.Comment: Typo in Eq.(12) has been correcte
Three-Particle Correlations from Parton Cascades in Au+Au Collisions
We present a study of three-particle correlations among a trigger particle
and two associated particles in Au + Au collisions at = 200 GeV
using a multi-phase transport model (AMPT) with both partonic and hadronic
interactions. We found that three-particle correlation densities in different
angular directions with respect to the triggered particle (`center', `cone',
`deflected', `near' and `near-away') increase with the number of participants.
The ratio of `deflected' to `cone' density approaches to 1.0 with the
increasing of number of participants, which indicates that partonic Mach-like
shock waves can be produced by strong parton cascades in central Au+Au
collisions.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures; Final version to appear in Physics Letters
Energy Independent Solution to the Solar Neutrino Anomaly including the SNO data
The global data on solar neutrino rates and spectrum, including the SNO
charged current rate, can be explained by LMA, LOW or the energy independent
solution -- corresponding to near-maximal mixing. All the three favour a mild
upward renormalisation of the Cl rate. A mild downward shift of the
neutrino flux is favoured by the energy independent and to a lesser extent the
LOW solution, but not by LMA. Comparison with the ratio of SK elastic and SNO
charged current scattering rates favours the LMA over the other two solutions,
but by no more than .Comment: 18 pages, latex, 3 figure
Stability of 1+1 dimensional causal relativistic viscous hydrodynamics
The stability of the 1+1 dimensional solution of Israel-Stewart theory is
investigated. Firstly, the evolution of the temperature and the ratio of the
bulk pressure over the equilibrium pressure of the background is explored. Then
the stability with linear perturbations is studied by using the Lyapunov direct
method. It shows that the shear viscosity may weaken the instability induced by
the large peak of bulk viscosity around the phase transition temperature .Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures, 1 table; to be published in Nuclear Physics
TeV-scale seesaw from a multi-Higgs model
We suggest new simple model of generating tiny neutrino masses through a
TeV-scale seesaw mechanism without requiring tiny Yukawa couplings. This model
is a simple extension of the standard model by introducing extra one Higgs
singlet, and one Higgs doublet with a tiny vacuum expectation value.
Experimental constraints, electroweak precision data and no large flavor
changing neutral currents, are satisfied since the extra doublet only has a
Yukawa interaction with lepton doublets and right-handed neutrinos, and their
masses are heavy of order a TeV-scale. Since active light neutrinos are
Majorana particles, this model predicts a neutrinoless double beta decay.Comment: 21 pages, 8 figure
Semisolid processing characteristics of AM series Mg alloys by rheo-diecasting
The official published version of this Article can be found at the link below - Copyright @ 2006 ASM InternationalAn investigation has been made into the solidification behavior and microstructural evolution of AM50, AM70, and AM90 alloys during rheo-diecasting, their processibility, and the resulting mechanical properties. It was found that solidification of AM series alloys under intensive melt shearing in the unique twin-screw slurry maker during rheo-diecasting gave rise to numerous spheroidal primary magnesium (Mg) particles that were uniformly present in the microstructure. As a result, the network of the beta-Mg17Al12 phase was consistently interrupted by these spheroidal and ductile particles. Such a microstructure reduced the obstacle of deformation and the harmfulness of the beta-Mg17Al12 network on ductility, and therefore improved the ductility of rheo-diecast AM alloys. It was shown that, even with 9 wt pct Al, the elongation of rheo-diecast AM90 still achieved (9 +/- 1.2) pct. Rheodiecasting thus provides an attractive processing route for upgrading the alloy specification of AM series alloys by increasing the aluminum (Al) content while ensuring ductility. Assessment of the processibility of AM series alloys for semisolid processing showed that high Al content AM series alloys are more suitable for rheo-diecasting than low Al content alloys, because of the lower sensitivity of solid fraction to temperature, the lower liquidus temperature, and the smaller interval between the semisolid processing temperature and the complete solidification temperature. This work is supported by the EPSR
